The Housing Authority of
Paducah has grown into one of the largest local providers of
affordable housing and family services in McCracken County.
The agency currently provides affordable housing for over
1,500 individuals and administers over twenty programs for
family, children, and the elderly.
Heritage Place, a
74-unit townhouse community, was demolished in 2000 after
months of intensive relocation and attrition of occupants.
In a working partnership with the City of Paducah, it was
decided that revitalization is most effectively achieved by
building single-family homes as opposed to concentrated
public housing units. Community Development in Paducah is
currently managing a process of addressing the needs of
deteriorating properties in the "lower town" area near
Paducah's riverfront. HAP's Homeownership Plan begins the
process of revitalization in the "upper town" district or
the south/central part of the city. HAP and the City of
Paducah recognize that homeownership is a key component for
successful neighborhood revitalization.
Physical changes to HAP properties have been plentiful in
the past few years. Central heat and air conditioning, and
energy efficient light fixtures have just been the beginning
of further improving the living conditions of our
apartments. Improvements in security, building entrances and
exteriors, and childcare are under way. The HAP is in the
process of creating single-family housing and a host of
other items meant to assist the low income and fixed income
families that we serve.
